The Public Affairs Research Council, a nonpartisan group that monitors state government, has compiled a free, revised online version of its guide to state government, titled "Your Louisiana Government: An Owner's Manual." The 138-page booklet, first published six years ago, reflects changes through May. PAR President Jim Brandt said the booklet originally was developed for use in social studies and civics classes but that it also serves as a "handy reference to Louisiana government for both citizens and newcomers to the state." Brandt said the information will help teachers and civic groups get a better grasp on the state and how its government operates. "It provides a brief history of Louisiana as well as basic information on a number of key governmental topics which are useful either in the classroom or for simply learning more about state and local government." The manual can be found at www.la-par.org/State_Government.cfm. More information is available by writing PAR at P. O. Box 14776, Baton Rouge, LA 70898-4776, by calling the organization at 1 (225) 926-8414 or by visiting www.la-par.org.
