Annual assessments
The state should require local tax assessors to reassess
all property every year instead of every four years, the independent Public
Affairs Research Council of Louisiana has recommended. The group, which monitors
legislation and promotes ethical practices in government, commended Gov.
Kathleen Blanco and the new chairman of the Louisiana Tax Commission for
their recent efforts to better police the activities of tax assessors across
the state. But the group says more needs to be done. It has been pushing
for annual reassessments for the past 20 years and says advances in computer
technology now makes the task easier. The Public Affairs Research Council
also recommends that assessors be appointed rather than elected.
